VMware ESXi Upgrade Software or system configuration of host is incompatible

2013-01-12 by Rasmus Haslund 1 Comment

This week a customer called me trying to upgrade his ESXi 5 hosts to ESXi 5.1 using a Dell customized ISO file trough Update Manager.

Upon attempting this however, Update Manager showed error Software or system configuration of host esx.domain.local is incompatible.

I immediately spotted this and clicked for details:
ESXi_upgrade_fail_dell_iso

Strangely enough the vSphere client can then actually tells us the ISO is not incompatible, but the host simply just needs to be rebooted!

Surely enough, I rebooted the server and re-scanned with the upgrade baseline. I was now able to remediate and proceed with the upgrade.

As always, if this helped you then please leave a comment 🙂
