Dell PowerConnect switch stack missing ports

2013-05-15 by Rasmus Haslund Leave a Comment

A customer called me while configuring two new Dell PowerConnect 6224 switches in a stack. After stacking the switches no ports on unit 2 would link up.

The web interface also looked wierd:
powerconnect_6224_missing_ports

As you can see above the switch looks like it has no ports at all.

As we can read in the Dell whitepaper on stacking PowerConnect 6224 switches the switches must run the same firmware version when being stacked.

Knowing that both switches had manually been firmware updated one at a time I checked the GUI for active images:
powerconnect_6224_active_images

This revealed that one of the switches were currently not booting into the newest firmware.

I changed this and performed a reload of unit 1 in the stack.
When the switch came up again the issue with missing ports was fixed.

As always, if this helped you – please leave a comment! 🙂
